The Do’s And Don’ts Of Sun Protection

The Do’s And Don’ts Of Sun Protection
Research shows that up to 80% of skin aging is caused by sun exposure, so it’s no wonder sunscreen is at the top of everyone’s skin care list. But while you may think that sunscreen is all you need to protect your skin, there’s a major ingredient you’re missing out on that could be BOOSTING the power and effectiveness of your sunscreen: Vitamin C.

Today I’m sharing the biggest sun protection do’s and don’ts and why vitamin C should be a part of your daily sun protection ritual! Get ready to soak it all in...

DO Get Some Sun On Your Skin

I love to be outside and my body and mind are happiest after a healthy dose of nourishing sunshine, so much so that it’s part of my daily self-care ritual to get sun on my face!

This is why it was so important to me that I know how to protect my skin the right way while being able to benefit from time outdoors.

The ideal time to nourish your skin with solar energy, is early in the morning (before 10am) and after 5pm in the evening, when the sun is less intense.

I like to call these the “solar safe hours” and it’s not as critical to wear sun protection during this time of day IF you’re listening to your skin and body for the signs of overexposure (see below). In fact, the sun produces some key vitamins that our immune system needs to function at its best!

DON’T Think You’re Safe Inside

While sunlight is the number one cause of skin aging, about 10% of sun damage comes from another form of light - High Energy Visible (HEV) and infrared light.

HEV is also known as the “blue” light which is emitted from the sun and electronic devices like your computer, laptop, and phone.

This means that even if you’re not in the sun, you can still be exposed to this form of light which destroys collagen and elastin and ages your skin. A 2014 study in the journal Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine notes that this type of non-UV radiation significantly contributes to photoaging and needs to be taken into consideration when formulating a skin-protective regimen.

DO Know The Signs Of Overexposure and Photoaging

The UV radiation that affects the skin is composed of two different types of waves, UVA and UVB. When UV rays hit the skin, they damage its DNA, collagen, and elastin. To prevent further damage, cells in the epidermis scramble to produce melanin resulting in melasma, age spots, and sunburn.

Remember those cute little freckles you got as a child after a day spent in the sun? Those were actually warning signs from your body that you had too much. Warning signs of photoaging damage are our body’s natural defense mechanism at work and can include:
  • Melasma
  • Freckles
  • Keratoses
  • Texture changes
  • Skin cancer and melanoma
If you have any pink, red, dry, or itchiness when out in the sun, this is most likely your body warning you that it has had enough of the sun.

DON’T Be Fooled By Your Sunscreen

One of the biggest and most dangerous illusions in skin care is thinking sunscreen is the only thing we need to protect our skin. While you may think that you’re protecting yourself from damaging solar radiation when you use sunscreen, studies today have proven that sunscreen is often useless in protecting our skin.

In fact, MOST sunscreens on the market today could be causing more harm than good, or do nothing at all in terms of photoaging and protection.

DO Know How To Choose A Sunscreen

We are constantly being asked when and if we will create a sunscreen for our skin care line, and the truth is - I doubt it. Instead, I want to focus on bringing you products like the Pure Oxygen Plasma and 20% Vitamin C Concentrate that will do more for you and your skin than sunscreen ever can.

But, I do have some must-haves when shopping for sunscreen to pair with your Vitamin C.

☀️ ALWAYS shop for a BROAD SPECTRUM sunscreen. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect from both UVA and UVB rays and are the most-effective types of sunscreen available.
☀️ When selecting your broad spectrum lotion, also be sure that it has an SPF of at least 30 or higher.
☀️ Don’t rely on sunscreen alone, always pair it with Vitamin C serum or Oxygen Plasma which work as boosters to your skin care products and sunscreen.

Always Use Vitamin C And Sunscreen Together

Even broad spectrum sunscreens only protect you from a mere 55% of the free radicals produced by UV exposure. To make up for this, it’s important to combine sunscreen and a topical antioxidant like Vitamin C, which neutralizes free radicals.

Combining Vitamin C serum and broad-spectrum sunscreen has been shown to be more effective at neutralizing free radical damage from sun exposure than just applying sunscreen alone and is the simplest way to amplify your protection from the effects of sun exposure.

Under laboratory conditions, combining Vitamin C and sunscreen showed:
  • A 52% reduction of UVB-induced erythema
  • 40-60% reduction in sunburn cell formation

A topical daily vitamin C serum is one of the best inventions the skincare community has made in regard to slowing down visible skin aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots,” says celebrity esthetician, Renee Rouleau. “This is especially true when it’s applied on a daily basis.”

DO Invest In High Quality Vitamin C

Vitamin C has photoprotective properties and staves off oxidative stress from the free radicals we meet throughout our day and leave some of the hardest wrinkles to remove on our face.

Unlike other topical products like sunscreen, oils, or moisturizer, what we LOVE about Vitamin C is that it can’t be wiped or washed off that easily and you can build a barrier for adequate photoprotection. This can be achieved by applying Vitamin C serum every eight hours.
